Have more children, keep Andhra Pradesh young, advises Chandrababu Naidu
ELURU: AP chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu has stirred a hornet's nest by asking people in the countryside to produce more children to keep the state ever young. Naidu, during his recent visit to Velivennu village in Nidadavolu mandal of West Godavari district, expressed concern over the growing number of elderly people.
He walked 18km from Velivennu to Brahmanagudem in Kovvur mandal meeting villagers and exhorting them to make Andhra Pradesh a "smart" state. Though the aim behind the padayatra on January 18 was to promote "smart village" concept, Naidu took time to talk about demographics post bifurcation of the state.
Interestingly, Naidu had promoted the small family concept and often boasted of the low population growth rate in the state during his earlier stint between 1995 and 2004. Expressing concern over "dipping population", Naidu told roadside meetings in West Godavari district that since circumstances have changed he would advise people to have large families as children are the future of the country.
"I have only one child. Many people are not bearing children. Even educated people are avoiding children these days," he pointed out adding that there is not much difference between the annual number of births and deaths in the state. He cautioned that if the trend continued the population of the state will dwindle at one point of time.

He told the villagers to produce one or two more children. "It is not good to have no children at all," he said. Naidu gave the example of Japan, where the population is quite old, to drive home his point. Only 10% of the population of AP is below five years of age.
