Investigations into scholar M.M. Kalburgi’s murder had not made much headway until now.
The investigations into the killing of Kannada scholar M.M. Kalburgi in August this year, took a dramatic turn on Wednesday after similarities emerged between a bullet-riddled body found in the forests of Belagavi district, with the sketch of one of the two suspected assailants of the writer.
Though the body was found on October 18, the police buried it on Tuesday as no claimant had come forward for identification. However, on Wednesday, the police received a tip-off claiming the body could be that of one of the suspects, whose sketches were released based on eye-witnesses to the murder.
While the Belagavi police have acknowledged the resemblance, no “firm link” has been established yet. Officials of the Criminal Investigation Department, who are probing the murder, reached Belagavi on Wednesday.
Kalburgi, who had received threats for his views against superstitious practices, was shot dead at his Dharwad home on August 30. Though the killings had sparked outrage against the ‘rising intolerance’ in the country, the investigations had not made any headway.
