NEW DELHI: Yesterday, three Muslim passengers on a Haridwar-bound train were beaten up"for covering their heads with rumaal (headscarves)". Since Mohammad Akhlaq’s lynching in September 2015, similar assaults have occurred on members of the Muslim and Dalit communities on the beef issue and under other pretexts. Here’s a list of such attacks, based only on widely reported incidents in the media:

September 2015
Mohammed Akhlaq was lynched in UP's Dadri for allegedly storing and consuming beef in his house.
May 2015

Abdul Ghaffar Qureshi, who ran a meat shop, was thrashed to death by a mob in Birloka village in Nagaur district.

August 2015
Three men were beaten to death on the suspicion of being cattle thieves. Anaf, Arif and Nazim, from Kaimrala village of Dadri, were confronted when they were transporting two buffaloes in their truck.

October 2015
Gasoline bombs were thrown at a truck being driven by one Zahid Bhat ,on the suspicion that he was transporting beef. The 18-year-old truck driver died of his injuries,10 days later.

October 2015
Nomanm, 22, from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, was beaten to death by a mob on the suspicion he was smuggling a cow. Four other people were also beaten up and booked under laws banning cow slaughter and preventing cruelty to animals.

March 2016
Mohammed Mazlum Ansari, 35, and his 15-year-old son, who were herding buffaloes, were found hanging from a tree in Jharkhand. The bodies bore signs of torture and had their hands tied at the back. Eight people were arrested, including a couple allegedly linked to a local cow vigilante group. The locals claimed the assailants were Hindu radicals.

July 2016
Four Dalit men were chained, stripped and beaten up, allegedly by cow vigilantes in Gujarat's Gir Somnath district. The victims said they were skinning an already dead cow.

April 2017
Pehlu Khan, a dairy farmer, was lynched by a mob of 200 alleged cow vigilantes in Alwar, Rajasthan. Six other people were also beaten up by the mob.

April 2017
Five members of a nomad cattle family, including a nine-year-old girl, were attacked by a mob on the suspicion that they were taking their cows to be slaughtered. A video posted on social media showed a mob chanting slogans and breaking into the family's shelter as it attacked an elderly member of the family.

April 2017
Three Muslim men were attacked by a group of men claiming to be "animal welfare activists" in Delhi. The men were transporting 14 buffaloes in a truck.

April-May 2017
Two youths, Abu Halifa and Aiyazuddin Ali , were publicly lynched at Kachomari village in central Assam's Nagaon district, some 100 km from Guwahati. Police said they were beaten mercilessly by a large mob after they were caught red-handed trying to steal cows from the area.

June 2017
A 19-year-old boy Junaid was stabbed to death and another sustained injuries after a mob attacked them in a train near Haryana's district of Faridabad. They were returning home to a village near Ballabgarh in Haryana, after shopping for Eid at Jama Masjid in Delhi. For three and a half hours, they were abused, humiliated and assaulted by a mob of 15-20 people that passed communal remarks and accused them of carrying beef in a bag.

June 2017
Three men were beaten to death in West Bengal's North Dinajpur district after they were allegedly found stealing cows from a house. The deceased were identified as Nasirul Haque (30), Mohammad Samiruddin (32) and Md Nasir (33). While Nasirul was taken to Islampur subdivisional hospital after the incident and succumbed to his injuries there, the other two died on the spot.

June 2017
A man identified as Asgar Ansari was beaten to death in Jharkhand by a group of people after they accused him of carrying beef in his car.

July 2017
A Muslim dairy owner was attacked by a group of over 1,000 men after a headless carcass was found near his home. Thirty police personnel were also injured as the mob laid a siege around 55-year-old Usman Ansari's house.

November 2017
A man identified as Ummar Muhammad was shot dead allegedly by cow vigilantes for transporting cow from Mewat in Haryana to Bharatpur in Rajasthan.
