New Delhi: The Ayodhya dispute has been listed for hearing before a Constitution bench on Friday. It is likely to take up the report of courtappointed mediators who were asked to explore possibility of an out of court settlement of the case.

Before attempting to judicially adjudicate the case pending before the SC since 2010, the bench had wanted to explore a negotiated settlement and had directed negotiations in Ayodhya away from media glare to facilitate a solution to an issue which has fractured India’s polity for several decades.

The mediators subsequently imposed a ban on media reporting the proceedings. Should the panel report failure in its attempt, the bench, comprising CJI Ranjan Gogoi and Justices SA Bobde, DY Chandrachud, Ashok Bhushan and Abdul Nazeer will begin hearing the case.

The Allahabad high court had in 2010 ordered partitioning the disputed 2.67 acre between claimants in 2:1 ratio.
