New Delhi: More than 300 teachers, researchers and journalists – based in different parts of India – have released a statement on the arrests happening amidst the COVID-19 lockdown, in the purported aftermath of the violence in northeast Delhi.

The statement holds that the arrests and subsequent charges applied under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act
are targeted towards Muslims and specifically, those who protested against the Citizenship Amendment Act.

The signatories have also “demanded a fair investigation into the violence instead of the targeting and framing of individuals and organisations.”

Signatories include economist Jean Dreze and educationist Anil Sadgopal, along with activists involved in various democratic movements pertaining to labour rights, education, women’s issues and other functions from across the country.


The full text of the statement is produced below.

We, the undersigned citizens, have been watching – with anger and dismay – the ceaseless harassment, interrogation and, in many instances, torture of protesters who participated in the recent sit-ins and agitations against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), 2019. Gulfisha, Khalid Saifi, Ishrat Jahan (both are Muslim community leaders), Safoora Zargar (member of the Jamia Coordination Committee) and Meeran Haider (president of the Rashtriya Janata Dal youth wing’s Delhi unit) have been arrested in the last few weeks. Safoora Zargar and Meeran Haider, both students of Jamia Milia Islamia, alongside Gulfisha, have been slapped with the draconian Unlawful Activities Prevention Act (UAPA). Umar Khalid, former student activist of Jawaharlal Nehru University, is also understood to have been slapped with the UAPA for his role in the protests, although the latest statement of a senior police officer suggests that he is still under investigation.

The arrests have been justified by the police as a necessary step towards identifying the forces behind the anti-Muslim pogrom that unfolded in North East Delhi in the wake of the peaceful and democratic anti-CAA protests. While police investigation into the violence is welcome, it’s character and direction raises concerns and suspicions. There is ample video evidence in the public domain of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Kapil Mishra threatening to take the law into his own hands a few days prior to the outbreak of violence. Despite that, the police seems intent on investigating the protesters and common Muslim citizens, to the extent of launching a veritable crackdown on them. Muslim activists, their acquaintances and ordinary Muslim citizens of Jamia Nagar, Northeast Delhi and other areas have been particularly targeted, with over 800 Muslims understood to have been picked up by the police. Many of them were victims of the violence and are still reeling under its effects. A range of students’ and women’s groups as well as other democratic organizations that participated in the protests have been harassed and are living in the fear of arrest.

We therefore have reasons to believe that the investigation is being (mis)used to crackdown on political dissent, as we have seen happen time and time again under the present BJP government. Perhaps it is the complexion of the anti-CAA movement in Delhi and elsewhere in India that has made it an object of wrath for the government. In Delhi, the protests were led by Muslim women of Shaheen Bagh, Seelampur, Jaffarabad, Hauz Rani, Khajuri Khas, and other localities, and these drew unprecedented support from students, women’s groups and the working classes. A landmark in the journey of Indian democracy in its own right, the movement has challenged two important claims of the government. First, that it is only the Left-Liberal elites (often referred to as “Libtards” in Twitter wars) who are dissatisfied with the government. Second, notwithstanding the BJP government’s continuous attack on Muslims through the allotment of the Babri Masjid premises for the building of a Hindu temple, tacit endorsements of riots and lynching, unabashed promotion of Islamophobia and the unilateral revocation of Article 370, the government claims to have won Muslim women over to its side by virtue of the controversial Triple Talaq Bill.

These arrests seem to mark the continuation of a disturbing trend: the BJP government’s practice of covering up the violence committed by Hindutva groups by blaming democratic activists and citizens for the same, and its general disregard for the lives of citizens. Gautam Navlakha and Anand Teltumbde have been arrested over the Bhima Koregaon violence of 2018, even as its real perpetrators such as Milind Ekbote (a leader of local Hindutva groups) roam free. Although the self-proclaimed Hindu Raksha Dal took responsibility for the armed assault by masked goons on students and teachers inside the Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) campus on 5 January 2020, and some of the attackers identified in the videos belonged to the Hindutva student organisation Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, Union Minister Ashwini Choubey claimed in its aftermath that the “Leftists” had been beaten up “by their own people”.

The latest arrests in Delhi have come at a time when the country is reeling under a pandemic induced lock down, and at the behest of none other than the Ministry of Home Affairs which controls the Delhi Police. The police have used peoples’ isolation and suspension of public activity to launch its clamp down. Besides defying the rationale behind the lock down, such (mis)use of the pandemic is inhuman: the prisons are unsafe for health reasons and the families of many of the protesters, belonging to the working classes, are in any case struggling to make do under the lock down. Manoeuvres such as these by the Home Ministry betray, yet again, the lopsided policies of the current administration.


Concerned primarily with satisfying its Hindutva vote bank and its big corporate allies, the government has prioritized crushing dissent over addressing the burning questions of universal public health care, securing the livelihoods and workplace rights of workers, and proactively addressing the gaping inequality between the “balcony classes” and the working classes. Throughout the Covid-19 pandemic, the government has done little to meet the needs of the working classes and the poor and instead, with the help of its allies in the media, have misled the public by sensationalizing the unfortunate events at the Tablighi Jamaat gathering. It is worth recalling that the anti-CAA protests were also against yet another misplaced policy: the National Register of Citizens (NRC) which threatens to exclude millions of Muslims from citizenship and entrap Dalits, Adivasis, women and the working classes in endless bureaucratic hassles for the purpose of proving their citizenship.

Identifying with the anti-CAA protests, which has correctly pointed out how the CAA is a distortion of the secular fabric of the Indian constitution, we express our solidarity with the protesters and with the Muslim citizens under attack in Delhi in the aftermath of the agitations and the pogrom. We demand an immediate end to the witch-hunt and urge the Delhi Police to identify the real culprits behind the violence and take action against them. At the same time, the signatories would like to appeal to citizens all over India to proactively organize against the lopsided priorities of the government. We urge all citizens to demand a governance that is secular and democratic; one that prioritizes the task of guaranteeing the basic rights of all citizens, especially the working classes, Dalits, Adivasis and others who are on the wrong side of our deeply unequal society.

కేసులు తగ్గడానికి కారణం టెస్టులు చేయకపోవడమేన‌ని ఆయ‌న అన్నారు. కేంద్రం ప్రతి రోజు 2వేల టెస్టులు చేసేందుకు అనుమతి ఇచ్చింది కానీ రాష్ట్ర ప్రభుత్వం టెస్ట్ లు చేయడం లేదన్నారు. కేంద్రం-ICMR టెస్టులు పెంచమంది కానీ ఎక్కడా టెస్టులు తగ్గించమని చెప్పలేదన్నారు. పాజిటివ్ వచ్చిన ప్రతి ఒక్కరికి ప్రత్యేక గదిని ఏర్పాటు చేయాలనే నిబంధనలు ఉన్నాయని, కరొనా రోగులకు సరైన వసతులు-సౌకర్యాలు లేకపోవడం వల్లే ధైర్యంగా ప్రజలు టెస్టుల కోసం ముందుకు రావడం లేదన్నారు సంజ‌య్.

తెలంగాణ రాష్ట్రాన్ని కేసీఆర్ నడుపుతున్నారా? లేదా DME ( వైద్య విద్య డైరెక్టరేట్) అధికారి నడుపుతున్నారా? అని ప్ర‌శ్నించారు. చనిపోయిన మృతదేహాలకు కరొనా టెస్టులు చేయొద్దని DME ఎలా ప్రకటిస్తారు? అని అన్నారు. ప్రభుత్వ నిర్లక్ష్యం వల్ల ఒక కరొనా రోగి మృతి చెందితే.. ఆయన వివరాలు అధికారిక లెక్కల్లో వెల్లడించలేదన్నారు ఎంపీ.

రంజాన్ కార‌ణంగానే కేసులు తగ్గించి టెస్టులు చేయట్లేద‌ని అన్నారు. ముస్లింల కోసం కేసీఆర్ కేసులు తగ్గిస్తున్నార‌న్నారు. ఒవైసీ తలొగ్గి కేసులు తగ్గించారని తెలిపారు. ముఖ్యమంత్రి కి సిగ్గు ఉంటే ఓల్డ్ సిటీలో ఎలా లాక్ డౌన్ అమలు అవుతుందో చూడాలన్నారు. ఇప్పటికే మర్కజ్ వల్ల దేశం అల్లకల్లోలం అయిందని, రాబోయే రోజుల్లో వైరస్ వ్యాప్తి చెంది-పాజిటివ్ కేసులు పెరిగితే ప్రభుత్వమే బాధ్య‌త వహించాలన్నారు. రంజాన్ మాసం మొదలు నుంచి లాక్ డౌన్ పూర్తి స్థాయిలో అమలు కావడం లేదన్నారు. ప్రభుత్వం రోజు విడుదల చేసే హెల్త్ బులిటెన్ లో అనేక తప్పులు ఉంటున్నాయని తెలిపారు.

ప్రభుత్వం ఒక వర్గానికి కొమ్ముకాసే విదంగా వ్యవహరిస్తోందని, ప్రతిపక్షాల సలహాలు-సూచనలు స్వీకరించే పరిస్థితిలో లేదన్నారు సంజ‌య్. ఓవైసీ మెప్పు కోసం కేసీఆర్ వ్యవహరిస్తున్నారన్నారు. నికార్సైన హిందు ముఖ్యమంత్రి.. ఉగాది పండుగ , శ్రీ రామ నవమి ఎలా జరిగిందో మర్చిపోయారా? అని ప్ర‌శ్నించారు. హిందూ పండుగలు, జయంతులు, గొప్పవ్యక్తుల వర్ధంతులు చేసుకోలేద‌ని గుర్తు చేశారు. ప్రభుత్వం తీరు వల్ల సమాజంలో చీలిక రాబోతుందన్నారు సంజ‌య్.

Palghar was not just a lynching, it was the culmination of several years of narrative-setting and normalization of hate. This article examines three broad themes that are pertinent to this gory incident – viewed individually they appear disparate but when threaded together they present a picture of the “Why” not just the “What” and “How” of this ghastly incident.   

The role of the Police
Palghar is a town located in the Konkan regional division of Maharashtra, approximately 87 kilometres north of Mumbai and about 24 kilometres west of the Mumbai-Ahmedabad National Highway.

While everyone has been talking about the “Palghar lynchings” and even hash-tagging it on social media, the brutal lynching itself actually occurred in Gadchinchale village of Dahanu Taluka located in Palghar district, about 140 kilometres north of Mumbai. This distinction is important, and we will see why.

As per the 2011 census, the village of Gadchinchale has approximately 248 households and a population of 1,208 (572 Males and 636 Females) out of which 248 were children below the age of 6 (119 Males and 129 Females) – this would mean that going by the 2011 figures, we arrive at about 453 adult males. Even if we assume that the population, doubled or tripled, it still flies in the face of what the now suspended policeman has claimed – that it was a 2,500-strong mob against 35 cops and the cops were overwhelmed, unless there was a huge influx of people from nearby villages, which he alludes to but is not substantiated by the evidence at hand. The police department itself has however maintained that the mob was around 450-strong – this seems closer to the truth on the basis of the following:

Population of Gadchinchale – and specifically the adult male population
The numerous videos that are floating around on Social Media which give us a fair indication of the numerical strength of the mob as well as the police
Clear evidence from the videos that the Sadhus were deliberately fed to the frenzied mob by at least one cop if not two
In another video that has emerged (Video-1 below), one can clearly see at least two of the victims, one of the Sadhus and perhaps the driver cowering in fear as they sit on the ground close to their badly damaged and toppled vehicle. A circle of cops seems to have formed a “protective” ring around the victims and one of the cops appears to be directing the others. The cops then seem to be leading the two men (victims) into an enclosure even as the mob screams but seems to be holding back

Then as we reconstruct the chronology of events, we can see one of the Sadhus clinging desperately to a policeman’s arm even as he is led out to the baying crowd. Again, it is just one policeman who leads the elderly and frail Sadhu from within the enclosure, just one policeman, not a posse, so clearly he did not have any fear of being lynched by the mob did he? The look of betrayal and fear of imminent death in the eyes of the sadhu are a dead giveaway that he was led out perhaps on a false assurance and then pushed into the mob just as a lamb for slaughter. Even as the video rolls, one can see the other Sadhu reach out to one of the policemen who proceeds to shake him off and the poor Sadhu is swallowed by the mob even as he falls under a hail of lathis, fists, stones, bricks, and feet.

None of the claims made by the suspended policeman or the police department adds up. Several questions remain unanswered:

What caused the policeman to lead the sadhu to his death – drag him out, hand him over to the mob and then even push him into the frenzied mob again?
How did a situation that seemed to have been under some sort of control (video-1) suddenly deteriorate to the extent that the police had no other option but to push the sadhus to their death – even if the circumstances were dire, doesn’t it go against the very principles of policing particularly these two principles of policing?
Police gain and keep public favour by constantly demonstrating absolute impartiality to the law, not by pandering to public opinion.
Police use physical force to secure observance of the law or restore order only when the exercise of
Did, not even one among the 30 to 40 odd policemen who reached the spot have a gun or a rifle? Couldn’t the police fire it in the air to disperse the mob?
Why did the police versions of the event present a false and distorted version of what actually transpired? Here is a compilation of what the police told the media versus what actually transpired and became evident when the videos started to emerge on social media:
“We tried to save the victims but were targeted by the mob and overwhelmed” – FALSE
“We found the three lying dead on the road when we reached the spot” – FALSE
“One of our patrolling vehicles later spotted the severely injured trio lying on the road and stopped to investigate. However, our team was also attacked by the mob and the vehicle pelted with stones. Our personnel had to flee and were unable to rescue to the victims” – FALSE
Finally, did the police receive some instructions to feed the monks to the hungry crowd? While this is just speculation at the moment, can any cop in India take a call such as this without getting instructions from his superior – one shudders to imagine such a possibility
Clearly, the police has much to answer for as far as this incident is concerned. Forget police reforms and policy changes (which are urgent requirements by the way), the need of the hour is an immediate re-orientation of the fundamentals of policing, discharge of police-duties, and maintenance of law & order.

The role of the media
At one time, we were told that the media is the fourth pillar of democracy and people like me actually believed this completely. In fact, if not for online platforms, blogs, and social media people like me would never be heard. Social media in that sense is a boon for people like us and a bane for the mainstream media (MSM) that had a free pass all along.

And, while talking about not being heard, it is pertinent to note that it took over 3,00,000 (that’s right three lakh tweets) flooding social media about an incident as brutal as this for the so called MSM to wake up and take notice. Till such time the news was banished to the insignificant corners of newspapers, buried under the mountain of what passes of as “News” and “Views” today.

For close to 48 hours, it was only the Social Media and the regional press that reported on this incident and it was the sheer volume of tweets and posts that made the state government wake up, take notice and issue a peremptory statement of how the law would take its course and no one should “communalize” the issue – no one was, all that the people were asking, was for the government to take notice and take action.

However, selective reporting, and even fake news is nowadays almost a given. As the Supreme Court lawyer Sai Deepak pointed out in this twitter-storm of a thread:

Selective outrage and complete silence of a section of the media is a given when it comes to injustice perpetrated on Hindus and there is really no use belabouring this point.

The fact remains, that despite the mushrooming of several Indic and so called right-wing platforms none of them has still been able to break through the vice-like grip of the left-dominated Indian media ecosystem and their heft and ability to influence policy remains weak – the blame for this of course lies squarely at the door of the present dispensation which has failed to either set the narrative or support those who can – and this remains a singular and glaring failure of the last seven years.

Unless and until, the need for a powerful cultural narrative is recognized as the only means to cultivate emotional connections and shape & control the stories within the cultural landscape, genuine power will continue to elude this dispensation at the centre. You could be perpetually in government but never ever in power – because politics is always downstream from culture.

The mainstreaming and normalization of saffron hate
The colour saffron is integral to Bharat – a symbol of courage and sacrifice. It is also the colour of the Sanyasis – people who were once revered in this country but now looked upon as thieves, child-snatchers, and organ-harvesters – figures of hate. This narrative-setting has gone on for a long time and continues unabated. It started with the British and then was institutionalized as state policy under free India – maybe not de jure but definitely de facto.

Read these snippets: “Inside the ashram, the boys sweated at cricket and football, cracked science and mathematics chasing golden careers, and meditated to the aroma of flowers. Inside incense-drugged prayer halls, they prayed to three deities: The Happy Bearded One, the Great Saffron One, and the Melting Mother.”

“One of the most powerful statesmen in the country aspired to become a Yogi once, not in the same sense he wanted. The failure, in the end, led him to become the most powerful statesman in India today.”

“Presiding over the event that honoured him, the chief monk of the order told an audience of eager students that this leader had once aspired to be a monk – a Yogi, in the tradition of this Great Saffron Order. He did not become a Yogi, not in the same sense he wanted. The failure, in the end, led him to become the most powerful statesman in India today. But his respect for the Great Saffron One burns just as bright as it did then.”

This is from an article (A New Brotherhood: Two Hues of India’s Saffron) published a couple of months ago in Outlook Magazine. Most readers of the above snippets would have made the connect as to who the author is referring to. For those who have been unable to make the connect, the ashram referred to is the Ramakrishna Ashram, the happy bearded one is Sri Ramakrishna, the great saffron one is Swami Vivekananda, and the melting mother is Shri Sharada Devi – this is the level of disdain that has become mainstream and that too for an institution that by all counts is perhaps the most secular religious institution in Bharat. Also, see how the connect is made between the present Prime Minister, the colour saffron, and the order of Sanyasis.

Another article published less than a year ago has this as its title: “CWC resolves to defeat saffron ideology of ‘fascism, hatred, divisiveness” However, nowhere in the copy does the word “saffron” occur. Instead the word saffron is substituted with RSS/BJP: “…the Congress on Tuesday held a meeting of its highest decision-making body, Congress Working Committee (CWC) here in which the party resolved to defeat the “RSS and BJPs ideology of fascism, hatred, anger and divisiveness” The subliminal messaging and the connect attempted is clear enough – RSS = BJP = Saffron = fascism/hatred/divisiveness.

That a clear attempt is being consistently made to equate saffron with Hindus and as a corollary with terror was pointed out in an article that appeared in the Terrorism Monitor under the head: “Saffron Scare: al-Qaeda‘s Propaganda War in India” The article has the following passage which again highlights the agenda of the vested interests and how mainstreaming of saffron terror occurs:

“Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (AQIS) has since sought to augment this with a series of videos released at the end of last year that purport to depict anti-Muslim policies and atrocities committed by Hindu right wing groups, as well as the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). The films all employ the phrase “saffron terror,” an allusion to violent Hindu nationalism”

And there is no end to the continuous vilification of the saffron hue and the attempt to connect it to terror, fascism and hatred. The NEW YORKER did a hit-piece here and The New York Times here. Closer home, the Congress party released a series of videos titled – “Saffron Hatred”

The Washington Post took it a step further coining yet more new words and phrases – “Cow Terrorists”, “Cow Vigilantes”, and yes “Saffron Terror”

None of this, has received any institutional response from the government of the day worth its name precisely because of the lack of a “narrative” compounded by the utter lack of an understanding what constitutes a “narrative.” Talking-heads” on television debates, and troll-armies on social media do not constitute narrative-setting – they are at best foot soldiers who will be trampled under the feet of the entrenched drivers of agenda and narrative.

Conclusion
When the three themes discussed above are threaded together, what emerges is the metaphor of what led to the Gadchinchale-Palghar lynching. The saffron-hue is symbolic of fascism, hate, and terror and those that wear it could well be thieves, child-snatchers or organ-harvesters and therefore they deserve what they got and because they got what they deserved, why make a song-dance about it – the news could be relegated to the hidden corners of newspapers and if no one really bothers about the death of a few saffron-clad sadhus, why should the police worry about any backlash?

And by-the-way the third person who also was killed was the driver – but surely he was only collateral damage? This is the “WHY” of what happened at Gadchinchale-Palghar

Bengaluru: Two businessmen brothers, Tajammul Pasha and Muzammil Pasha, in Karnataka's Kolar district have set out to help people in need amid the lockdown over the COVID-19 pandemic by selling their land for Rs 25 lakh.
On seeing daily wage labourers and their families in Kolar suffer during the lockdown, the brothers said they decided to sell their land and use the money to buy essentials and food grain for a large number of poor people.

The brothers also bought oil and cereals with the money. Then they set up a tent next to their house and started a community kitchen to make food for labourers and homeless people.

"Our parents died early. When we shifted to our maternal grandmother's place at  Kolar, people from communities, Hindus, Sikhs, Muslims helped us survive without any religious bias," said Tajammul Pasha, visibly emotional.

The Pasha brothers are into banana cultivation and real estate. Tajammul was five and his sibling Muzammil was three when they lost their parents. They had to move from Chickbalapor to Kollar, where their grandmother lived.

"We were brought up in poverty. We survived because of the support of people of all communities and religions. We have signed the society agreement bond and handed it over to our friend who purchased our site and gave the money," the brothers said.

Once the lockdown ends and the land registrar's office opens, the remaining steps to transfer the land will be completed, they said.

So far the two brothers have supplied food grain, oil, sugar and other essentials to over 3,000 families. They have also given hand sanitizers and masks to the poor.

The Kolar administration has issued passes to their volunteers so that they can help in this difficult time.

The number of coronavirus cases in India has increased to 24,506, including 775 deaths, the Home Ministry said today, adding that 1,429 cases and 57 deaths were reported in the last 24 hours.

Amid a countrywide lockdown to check the spread of the highly contagious illness, which began on March 25, the government last night issued an order to allow neighbourhood shops to remain open with conditions; malls across India continue to remain shut.

Sigh. Before we could recover from Arnab Goswami’s tirade against the migrant workers who gathered in Bandra last week — he actually suggested the protesting workers were all paid actors — we were struck with his latest offering on the tragic Palghar incident where two sadhus and their driver were lynched.

Given the facts of the case, one would expect sombre TV debates on the devastating role of social media rumours in fuelling mob violence or the inability of the Maharashtra police in controlling the mob. Better yet, one could demand swift justice in all cases of lynching so as to set an example.

Not if you’re Goswami for whom even a crime as gruesome as this is just another excuse to play the role of the establishment rottweiler. On Republic Bharat, on Tuesday night, you could almost hear the voices in Goswami’s head: “Sic’ em boy, here’s your chance to bite off Lutyens’ Lobby, Liberals, Opposition, all of them in one go.”.


Goswami began his show berating everyone for being silent on the murder of Hindus. Never mind that he himself was three days late in picking up the story on primetime. The lynching occured on April 16, and he first woke up to it on April 20 with a debate on Republic TV (Who tried to downplay lynching?).

The next day, he did a show on Republic Bharat, where he hosts a debate in Hindi called Poochta Hai Bharat, or India is Asking. It’s the same shouting-match format with multiple windows, with Goswami anchoring as a coked-up version of himself.

He kicks off the show thus: “Do santon ki KHULLE AAM hatya...jis desh ki 80 partishit se zyaada aabaadi HINDU HAI, SANATANI HAI, kya wahan HINDU HONA ek apraadh ho gaya hai? ARREY mere desh ko yeh manzoor nahin hai. AUR YEH MERA DESH HAI!!!!”

Roughly translated, Goswami screams: Two saints have been murdered in broad daylight...in a country where 80 percent of the people are Hindu and follow the Sanatan Dharam, it has become a crime to be Hindu. I don’t accept this in my country and this is my country. “Would there be silence if a Maulvi or Padri was murdered?!?” he asked.

Then he trains his guns on Maharashtra Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi: “Yeh Sonia-Sena wali sarkar ne chaar din tak is desh se kyun chupaya?” Why did the Sonia-Sena government hide this crime from India for four days? he demanded to know.

It doesn’t end there. Goswami then launches into what would be a bizarre line of attack for the staunchest of Sonia Gandhi’s critics: “Italy waali Sonia Gandhi...aaj woh chup hain, man hi man main mujhe lagta hai woh kush hai...woh khush hai ki santon ko maara gaya, jahan pe unki sarkar hai. Report bhejegi woh...woh Italy main report bhejegi...main bol raha hun...jahan pe main ne sarkar bana li, wahan pe Hindu santon ko main marwa rahi hun. Aur wahan se waah waahi milegi usko…’waah beta waah, bahut accha kiya Sonia Gandhi Antonia Maino’.”

In case you missed it or couldn’t believe your ears, Goswami accuses Sonia Gandhi of getting the sadhus killed and sending reports to Italy about how she has managed to bump off Hindus in states where she governs. Not only this, according to Goswami, she is congratulated for her work by people in Italy.

We’d like to ask the Consulate General of Italy in India how it feels about India’s noisiest newsman accusing their countrymen of masterminding attacks against Hindus. But the nationalist in us would like to spare India the embarrassment after the UAE fiasco.

There’s obviously no proof to back up these accusations Goswami made on his show. From what we know so far, the identity of the men in saffron was not a trigger in this crime. The trigger was incessant social media rumours about kidnappers and bandits on the prowl; just two days earlier, on April 14, a group of doctors was attacked and held hostage in the adjoining area. "The doctors who were mistaken for thieves were initially stoned at and later tied up,” notes a report in Mumbai Mirror.

Questions should be asked about why the administration was unable to stop a second attack on April 16, and pressure should be built on the state government to ensure swift punishment. But Goswami does none of this. Instead, by giving the lynching a communal colour, he is guilty of trying to spark a second round of violence by stoking fear of Hindus being in peril in their own homeland.

“Kya Hinudon ko is desh ka sabse kamzor kaum maan liya gaya hai...kisi logon ne aaj socha hai ki Hindu kaum sabse kamzor kaum hai. Hindu kaum sabse kamzor kaum nahin hai. Aap ne dhairya dekha hai, taakat bhi aap samajh lijiye.”

Roughly translated, he says, “Hindus are not the weakest community, we are not weak. You’ve seen our patience, but you should understand our strength.” Replace the words Hindus with Muslims and imagine for a second one of the Owaisi brothers saying something like this, and think of the primetime outrage that it would have caused for weeks on end. Goswami would have certainly called for their arrest.

Know the brands

Goswami’s antics have predictably sparked yet another cycle of outrage with Twitter handles demanding his arrest and declaring their undying support. Congress party workers have filed FIRs across states turning the whole thing into a comical photo-op.

Late last night, Goswami said he had been attacked by Youth Congress goons. He said he would file a police complaint: “Sonia Gandhi, bring it on,” he declared. Two people were arrested in connection with the incident this morning.

But what of Goswami’s lies and incitement? Rest assured, this attack will allow him to brazen out this latest episode of fakery just like he did when his network was called out for spreading fake news about the Jamia shooting, communalising the Bandra migrant protest, bullying a Muslim panelist to prove his patriotism by chanting “Bharat Mata ki Jai” (Hail Mother India)...the list is endless.

So long as there are big brands willing to fuel this nightly cocktail of hate and misinformation, don’t expect him to recoil in guilt or shame.

It is important to note that even as powerful a TV anchor as Fox News’ Tucker Carlson lost close to 70 advertisers for saying there was no problem of white supremacy in the United States and that it was a “hoax” proliferated by the media after mass shootings. One such shooting had left 22 people dead in Texas, and the gunman had reportedly posted a white supremacist manifesto online.

Unlike Goswami returning back to primetime last night with zero remorse and more bluster, Fox News sent Carlson on a vacation. Brands like HelloFresh, Nestle, SteinMart, Calm, and SoFi pulled out.

In India, we are far from brands showing such moral scruples.

As Goswami screeched on air, brands such as Renault Triber, Amul and Paytm happily declared that they were “powering” this conspiracy-laden show. Renault Triber, a French multinational automobile manufacturer, is in fact the prime sponsor. Ironically, the company’s India arm informs us that as part of its corporate social responsibility, it’s committed to “bringing people together”. Other sponsors include steel company Goel TMT and Century Ply.

The brand that kept popping up through Goswami’s Republic Bharat offering is EbixCash, a supplier of on-demand software and e-commerce services.

Ebix recently made news for acquiring online travel portal Yatra.com and partnered with Republic TV to build a brand-integrated news studio. The founder of the company, Robin Raina, announced the company’s partnership with Republic Media Network in October 2019 as “the next big thing in the world of brand-media collaborations”. He called the partnership a vehicle to take forward “our like-minded ideologies”.

An article in Money Control describes him thus: “A business tycoon, philanthropist, socialite and a fitness enthusiast, Raina never shies away from speaking his mind”. We are also told that he wants “to make charity look cool”.

The PR spiel you find in such pieces on “brand philosophy” and “corporate social responsibility” runs in stark contrast to what EbixCash has decided to power – a news show that spreads misinformation and hate, which can have very real consequences in a country that’s witnessing a religious divide even amid a pandemic. It’s possible that Raina doesn’t watch the drivel that his brand promotes but if he reads this piece and does nothing about it, we can be sure of where the tycoon-cum-philanthropist’s allegiances lie.

Out of the over 4,000 cases of coronavirus, at least 1,445 have been found to be

linked to the Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Delhi, the Union health ministry

said on Monday. The ministry’s updated data came a day after it said the rate of

doubling of COVID-19 cases in India accelerated to 4.1 days from the perviously

estimated 7.4 days due to the Jamaat event held in Nizamuddin West last

month.

According to an updated evening tally of the ministry, the total death toll now

stands at 111 and the number of cases has climbed to 4,281. However, a PTI

tally based on figures reported by states directly showed at least 129 deaths

across the country, while the confirmed cases have reached 4,533. Of them, 344

have been cured and discharged.

Presenting an analysis of the cases based on gender distribution, Agarwal said

males account for 76 per cent of the positive cases and females 24 per cent.

Agarwal said people aged below 40 years account for 47 pc of the total cases,

those between 40 and 60 for 34 pc, and those aged 60 years and above

account for 19 pc.

Males account for 73 per cent deaths due to coronavirus while females 27 per

cent, he said, adding that 63 per cent deaths have been reported among people

aged 60 and above, 30 per cent among people between 40 to 60 years and 7

per cent among people below 40 years. “As of now, 86 per cent death cases

have exhibited comorbidity related to diabetes, chronic kidney issues,

hypertension and heart-related problems. Since 63 per cent deaths have been

observed among elderly, they form a high risk population,” Agarwal said.

Young people with comorbidities are also at high risk of COVID-19, he said,

while urging them to be equally careful and follow social distancing. On AIIMS

Director Randeep Guleria reportedly saying that there has been “localised

community transmission” in some parts of the country, Agarwal commented,

“What the director has said is not in variance with what we have been explaining

to you. He said localised community transmission, which implies a larger number

of cases have been found in a particular area.”

According to an ICMR official, there is limited evidence on the efficacy of

hydroxychloroquine to deal with COVID-19 cases and therefore, there is not

enough proof to advise it for the general public.

The Cabinet Secretary has been interacting through video conference with

various district officials at cutting edge levels to ensure uniformity of response in

all state. All districts have been advised to have a district-level Crisis

Management Plan for COVID-19.

States have already been advised to use funds under the National Health

Mission (NHM) and State Disaster Relief Fund (SDRF) to create quarantine

centres, dedicated COVID-19 hospitals and treatment of patients, he said. “In

addition to this, Rs 1,100 crore has been sanctioned to all the states under the

National Health Mission and Rs 3,000 crore of additional funds were released

today. Also, N-95 masks, ventilators and PPEs are being procured from the

central pool and distributed to all the states across the country,” he said.

Gangakhedkar said orders have been placed for procuring 5 lakh rapid antibody

test kits for conducting COVID-19 tests. Around 2.50 lakh kits are likely to

delivered by April 8 or 9. When asked whether hydroxychloroquine is

recommended for public consumption, he said the government has allowed its

use as a preventive medication for healthcare workers dealing with coronavirus

infected patients. “There is limited evidence on the efficacy of the drug,” Khedkar

said, adding that the drug has side effects and people should not take it unless

advised by a doctor.

New Delhi: In a shocking revelation, the Health Ministry has stated nearly 30%

i.e 4291 cases of the total 14,378 Coronavirus cases were caused due to the

Nizamuddin Markaz event in Delhi by Tablighi Jamaat.

Speaking at a press conference, Joint Secretary in the Health Ministry Lav

Agarwal said on Saturday said 4,291 or about 30% of Coronavirus cases in the

country have been traced to Tablighi Jamaat congregation in Delhi out of 14,378

cases in the country. In Delhi, 63% of the reported 1,707 cases are linked to the

same gathering.

Nearly 40,000 people related to Delhi's Nizamuddin event have already been

quarantined.

The total number of confirmed cases in India is 14,378, 1,991 have been cured

and 480 people have succumbed to the disease. There are 11,906 active cases

in the country.

The mortality rate due to COVID-19 is 3.3%.

Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary Health Ministry, said that 4,291 Coronavirus cases

are epidemiologically linked to the Nizamuddin Markaz case. These cases are

spread across 23 states and Union Territories, which include most of the high

degree burden cases. He added that 84% of cases in Tamil Nadu, 63% cases in

Delhi, 79% cases in Telangana, 59% cases in Uttar Pradesh and 61% cases in

Andhra Pradesh are related to the event.

Agarwal said, "If lockdown and social distancing norms are not followed, then the

entire country would have to face the consequences". The country in the last 24

hours saw 991 fresh COVID-19 cases and 43 deaths.

He also added that 47 districts in 23 states have shown positive trends in the

fight against the Coronavirus outbreak in the country. One district each in

Puducherry and Karnataka has not reported a positive Coronavirus yet along

with 22 new districts, split across various states, have also not reported new

cases in the last 14 days.

The health ministry official also added that the RT-PCR test is the standard

frontline test for COVID-19 diagnosis and the rapid antibody test to be used for

surveillance in hotspots.

‘It happened due to rumours about child kidnappers, thieves prowling in area’
Maharashtra Home Minister Anil Deshmukh on Wednesday made public the list of 101 people arrested for the lynching of three people, including two sadhus, in Palghar last week. He said none of the arrested were Muslims, and once again appealed to everyone to not communalise the incident.

In a statement on social media, Mr. Deshmukh said, “Palghar lynching is a grotesque incident which happened due to rumours on social media about child kidnappers and thieves prowling in the area. A high-level inquiry is going on. People are requested to verify the facts from trusted sources and not fall for rumours.”

“There was a sound heard in the video ‘oye bas,’ and people circulated it online with some calling it ‘Shoaib bas’. At a time when the entire State machinery is busy fighting coronavirus, there are some people who are trying to bring communal angle into it,” he said.

FIR against news anchor

The Nagpur police late on Wednesday night registered an FIR against news anchor and editor of Republic TV, Arnab Goswami, acting on a complaint filed by State Power Minister Nitin Raut.

The FIR includes charges of giving provocation with intent to cause riot, promoting enmity between two groups on grounds of religion or race, deliberate and malicious acts intended to outrage religious feelings of any class by insulting its religion or religious beliefs, and defamation under the Indian Penal Code.

Mr. Goswami, in his TV show, had allegedly made inflammatory statements on the Palghar lynching and linked Congress president Sonia Gandhi with the incident.

Maharashtra Congress Committee president and Revenue Minister Balasaheb Thorat tweeted, “I condemn the attempts made by Arnab Goswami to communalise the unfortunate incident at Palghar & also the derogatory language used by him against @INCIndia President Sonia ji Gandhi. I have spoken to CM @OfficeofUT & HM @AnilDeshmukhNCP. Strict action will be initiated against him.”

Minister of State (Home) Satej Patil told The Hindu that the government had asked the authorities to collect all information about the show and its content. “We are verifying the details. Appropriate action will be taken after analysing everything,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee issued a statement demanding action against the news anchor for making extremely objectionable personal remarks against Ms. Gandhi.

పీటీఐ వార్తాసంస్థ కథనం ప్రకారం సూరత్‌కు కారులో వెళ్తున్న ముగ్గురు వ్యక్తులను పాల్ఘర్‌లో కొందరు అడ్డుకున్నారు. వాళ్లను కారు నుంచి బయటకు లాగి కొట్టి చంపారు.

కారులో ప్రయాణిస్తున్నది దొంగలనే అనుమానంతో ఆ మూక వారిపై దాడి చేసింది.

కానీ, వాళ్లు సూరత్‌లో ఓ వ్యక్తి అంత్యక్రియలకు హాజరయ్యేందుకు వెళ్తున్నారు.

దాడిలో మరణించిన ఈ ముగ్గురిలో ఇద్దరు సాధువులు, మరొకరు వాళ్ల కారు డ్రైవర్.

సాధువుల్లో ఒకరి వయసు 70 ఏళ్లు, మరొకరి వయసు 35 ఏళ్లు ఉంటుంది. వీరితోపాటు ఉన్న కారు డ్రైవర్ వయసు 30 ఏళ్లు.

ఘటనకు సంబంధించి మొత్తం 110 మంది నిందితులను అరెస్టు చేశామని, వారిలో 9 మంది మైనర్లు ఉన్నారని పాల్ఘర్ పోలీసులు అధికారిక ట్విటర్ ఖాతా ద్వారా తెలిపారు.

నిందితుల్లో 101 మంది ఈ నెల 30 వరకూ పోలీసు కస్టడీలో ఉంటారని, ఘటనపై విచారణ కొనసాగుతోందని పేర్కొన్నారు.

ఉన్నత స్థాయి విచారణ జరపాలి: బీజేపీ

గురువారం రాత్రి ఈ మూక దాడి జరిగింది. ఈ ఘటనకు సంబంధించిన ఓ వీడియో ఆదివారం సోషల్ మీడియాలో వైరల్ అయ్యింది.

దాడి జరుగుతున్న సమయంలో పోలీసు అధికారి అక్కడే ఉండటం ఆ వీడియోలో కనిపించింది.

ఈ వీడియో బయటకు వచ్చిన తర్వాత, ఘటనపై ఉన్నత స్థాయి విచారణ జరిపించాలని మహారాష్ట్ర మాజీ ముఖ్యమంత్రి, బీజేపీ నాయకుడు దేవేంద్ర ఫడణవీస్ డిమాండ్ చేశారు.

‘‘పోలీసుల ముందే ఓ గుంపు మనుషుల్ని కొడుతుండటం సిగ్గుపడాల్సిన విషయం. పోలీసుల దగ్గరి నుంచి లాక్కెళ్లి మరీ కొడుతున్నారు. మహారాష్ట్రలో చట్టవ్యవస్థ బలహీనపడిపోయిందా?’’ అని ఆయన ప్రశ్నించారు.

అఖిల భారతీయ అఖాడా పరిషత్ సంస్థ కూడా ఈ దాడిని ఖండించింది. బాధిత సాధువులు జూనా అఖాడేకు సంబంధించినవారుగా పేర్కొంది.

మరోవైపు దేశంలో 144 సెక్షన్ అమల్లో ఉంటే ఇంత మంది జనం ఎలా పోగయ్యారని జూనా అఖాడే అధికార ప్రతినిధి మహంత్ నారారణ్ గిరి సందేహం వ్యక్తం చేశారు.

బీజేపీ జాతీయ అధికార ప్రతినిధి సంబిత్ పాత్రా కూడా పాల్ఘర్ ఘటనపై స్పందిస్తూ ట్వీట్ చేశారు.

‘‘మహారాష్ట్రలో ఇద్దరు సాధువులను, వారి డ్రైవర్‌ను విచక్షణరహితంగా కొందరు కొట్టిచంపారు. ఇప్పటివరకూ లిబరల్స్ ఎవరూ కనీసం నోరు మెదపలేదు. ప్రజాస్వామ్యం, రాజ్యాంగం ఏమయ్యాయంటూ ఆక్రోశం వ్యక్తం చేయడం లేదు’’ అని ఆయన అన్నారు.

వైరస్ మత చిహ్నాలేమీ ధరించదు. రుగ్మతకు లోను చేసి, చావును తీసుకొచ్చే విషక్రిమి అది. మలబార్ హిల్ ధనికులనూ, ధారవి పేదలనూ; వసంత్ విహార్ కులీనులనూ, నిజాముద్దీన్ నిర్భాగ్యులనూ ఒకేలా పీడిస్తుంది. పక్షపాతం దానికి అస్వాభావికం. కరోనా వైరస్ మనకు మహా అపరిచిత (గ్రేట్ అన్‌నోన్). దాని వ్యాప్తిని అర్థం చేసుకోవాలంటే విభేదాలు, విద్వేషాలను రెచ్చగొట్టే ఎజెండాలపై కాకుండా ఖచ్చితమైన సమాచారంపై మన దృష్టిని నిరంతరం కేంద్రీకరించాలి.

కొన్నివిషయాలు హానికరమైనవి. ఈ వాస్తవాన్ని లోకానికి ఎంతగా చెప్పినప్పటికీ మీకు కంఠశోషే మిగులుతుంది. ‘న్యూస్ టెలివిజన్ ఎట్టకేలకు హిందూ -ముస్లిం దృష్టికోణం నుంచి బయటపడినట్టు అనిపిస్తుందని’ గత నెల ప్రధానమంత్రి నరేంద్ర మోదీ లాక్‌డౌన్ ప్రకటించిన అనంతరం ఒక పాత్రికేయ సహచరుడితో అన్నాను. నిజంగా అమితానందంతో అన్న మాటలవి. డాక్టర్లు, బయో-మెడికల్ పరిశోధకులతో మాటా మంతీ జరిపేందుకు న్యూస్‌ఛానెల్స్ పోటీ పడుతూ ఒక కొత్త (ప్రజారోగ్యం, వైరాలజీ -వైరస్‌ల అధ్యయన శాస్త్ర) ప్రపంచాన్ని కనుగొంటున్నాయి. తమ వీక్షకులను విభ్రమ పరుస్తూ అలరిస్తున్నాయి. అవి నిజంగా ప్రతి అంశాన్ని ఒక నిర్దిష్ట హిందూ-ముస్లిం భేదభావం నుంచి పరిగణించే అలవాటును విడనాడాయని సంతసించాను. అయితే ఈ సంతోషం ఎన్నో రోజులు నిలవ లేదు. తబ్లీఘీ జమాత్ ఉదంతం వెలుగులోకి వచ్చింది. అది అలా రావడానికి, ఇలా న్యూస్ ఛానెల్స్‌లో పరిచిత ముఖాలు, సుప్రసిద్ధ కథనాలు మళ్ళీ కన్పించడానికి- విన్పించడానికి మధ్య వ్యవధి లేకుండా పోయింది. నేను ఎంతగా పొరపడ్డాను! ఒక పౌరుడుగా, ఒక పాత్రికేయుడుగా ఇంతకంటే ఎక్కువగా నేను మరే విషయంలోనూ పొరపడలేదు. కరోనా జిహాద్, తబ్లీఘిస్తాన్, తబ్లీఘ్ -పాకిస్థాన్ కుట్ర... ఇత్యాది కర్కశ, సంచలనాత్మక, ఉద్రేకపూరిత శీర్షికలు మళ్ళీ ప్రత్యక్ష మవసాగాయి. కరోనా వైరస్ కాలంలో కూడా ఇస్లామో ఫోబియా యథావిధిగా కొనసాగుతూనే వున్నది. ఎంత శోచనీయం!

గత కొద్ది సంవత్సరాలుగా ‘జాతీయవాద’ మీడియాలో ఒక ప్రబల ధోరణి స్పష్టంగా కన్పిస్తున్నది. భారతీయ ముస్లిం హింసావాది, అవిశ్వసనీయ వ్యక్తి, జాతి -వ్యతిరేకి కూడా అనేదే ఆ ప్రముఖ ధోరణి. కశ్మీర్‌లో ఉగ్రవాదం నుంచి స్వయం నియమిత మౌలానాల ఫత్వాల దాకా ప్రతి సమర్థించలేని చర్యా ఒక మత సమూహాన్ని మొత్తంగా క్షమించరాని ముద్దాయిగా నిలబెడుతున్నది. కొన్ని టీవీ ఛానెల్స్‌కు ప్రతి సాయంత్రమూ, మనో భావాలను దెబ్బతీసి, భావోద్వేగాలను రెచ్చగొట్టే మతపరమైన అంశాలకు ప్రాధాన్యమివ్వడం ఒక ఆనవాయితీ అయిపోయింది. తబ్లీఘీ కథ ఈ ఆనవాయితీకి పూర్తిగా సరిపోతుంది, బాగా ఉపయోగపడుతోంది. మసీదులో దాక్కున్న ఒక మతాచార్యుడు, కుర్తా-పైజమాలు ధరించి నిండుగడ్డాలతో వున్న యువకులు గుంపులు గుంపులుగా సంచరించడం, విదేశీ సంస్థలతో సన్నిహిత సంబంధాలున్న ఒక అఖిల భారత నెట్‌వర్క్, కరోనా పాజిటివ్ కేసులు ముస్లింలలో అత్యధికంగా వుండడం... ఇంకేం కావాలి? పౌర ధర్మాల ఆచరణలో ఒక మత బృందంవారి బాధ్యతారాహిత్యం, ఇస్లాం అనేది చట్ట విరుద్ధంగా వ్యవహరించే ఉన్మాదుల మతంగా పరిగణించేందుకు మరో ప్రాతిపదిక అయింది! అసలు తబ్లీఘీల సమావేశాన్ని నిరోధించడంలో ఢిల్లీ పోలీసులు నేరపూరితమైన నిర్లక్ష్యాన్ని చూపారన్న వాస్తవాన్ని ఇస్లాంపై దుమ్మెత్తి పోసే వారు విస్మరిస్తున్నారు. అసదుద్దీన్ ఒవైసీ లాంటి ఎంపీలు నమాజ్ మొదలైన మతానుష్ఠానాలకు గుమిగూడవద్దని, లాక్‌డౌన్ నియమ నిబంధనలను ఖచ్చితంగా పాటించి తీరాలని తమ మద్దతుదారులకు పదే పదే విజ్ఞప్తి చేశారన్న విషయాన్ని కూడా కనీస మాత్రంగానైనా పట్టించుకోనేలేదు.

ఆమాటకొస్తే మక్కా (ఇస్లాం పుణ్య స్థలి) లోని పవిత్ర కాబా పరిసర ప్రాంతంలోకి భక్తుల ప్రవేశాన్ని నిషేధించారు. ప్రైమ్ టైమ్ ‘శత్రువు’ను కనుగొన్నప్పుడు ఈ వాస్తవాల వి వరాలను పట్టించుకునేదెవరు? భారతీయ ముస్లిం ను ఇప్పుడు తీవ్రంగా నిందిస్తున్నారు. ‘కరోనా వాహకుడు’ అనే ముద్రను అతడిపై వేశారు. కొద్దిమంది పాల్పడిన ఒక మూర్ఖపు చర్యకు 20కోట్లమంది ముస్లింలూ మూల్యం చెల్లించాల్సిం దేనన్నట్టుగా ఇస్లాం మతవిద్వేషులు వ్యవహరిస్తున్నారు. ఇదెంతవరకు సబబు?

తబ్లిఘి జమాత్ ఉదంతం వెలుగులోకి వచ్చిన అనంతరం తప్పుడు సమాచారంతో జరుగుతున్న ప్రచారాలు ముస్లింలకు వ్యతిరేకంగా పరిణమించాయని ప్రొఫెసర్ జోయో జీత్ పాల్ (టీవీ ప్రసారాల, సామాజిక మాధ్యమాల ధోరణులపై విస్తృతస్థాయిలో పరిశోధనలు నిర్వహించిన మీడియా నిపుణుడు) నిర్ధారించారు. ఈ తప్పుడు సమాచారాన్ని తొలుత సంభావ్య చికిత్సలు, నిత్యావసర సేవల లోటుపై కలవరపాటు విషయమై ప్రచారం చేయడం జరిగింది. అయితే మార్చి నెలాఖరులో ఈ ధోరణి మారింది. ముస్లింలను నేరుగా ప్రస్తావిస్తూ భారత్‌లో కరోనా వైరస్ ప్రబలడానికి ఇస్లాం మతస్థులే బాధ్యులన్న విషపూరిత ప్రచారానికి ప్రాధాన్యం పెరిగింది. ముస్లిం జన సమూహాలు భౌతిక దూరం నిబంధనను ఉల్లంఘించడానికి సంబంధించి నకిలీ వీడియోలు పెద్ద ఎత్తున సర్క్యులేట్ చేస్తున్నారు. వాట్సాప్ సందేశాలు కూడా ఇదే విషయాన్ని విస్తృతంగా ప్రచారం చేశాయి. ఈ తప్పుడు ప్రచారాన్ని ఖండించడానికి రాజకీయవేత్తలు ఎవరూ ఎలాంటి ప్రయత్నమూ చేయలేదు. మన రాజకీయ వేత్తల భావ దారిద్ర్యం, దివాలాకోరు ఆలోచనా ధోరణులను ఇదెంతైనా ప్రతిబింబిస్తున్నదని చెప్పక తప్పదు. లౌకికవాదం గురించి ఎవరు ఎంతగా మాట్లాడినప్పటికీ వారి అంతరంగం మత పరమైన దురభిప్రాయాలతో నిండిపోయి వున్నదనే సత్యాన్ని ఈ పరిణామాలు స్పష్టం చేశాయి. పైగా తబ్లిఘీ మత సమ్మేళనంలో పాల్గొన్నవారిలో ఎంత మందికి కరోనా వైరస్ సోకినట్టుగా వైద్యపరీక్షల్లో నిర్ధారణ అయిందో గణాంకాలను ప్రభుత్వాధికారులు, న్యూస్ ఛానెల్స్, డిజిటల్ యోధులు ప్రతిరోజూ వెల్లడించడం పరిపాటి అయింది. మహమ్మారి పీడితులను మత పరంగా గుర్తించకూడదన్న ప్రపంచ ఆరోగ్య సంస్థ నిర్దేశాన్ని బాధ్యతాయుత వ్యక్తులు పూర్తిగా ఉపేక్షించడం ఎంతైనా గర్హనీయం.

ప్రధానమంత్రి మోదీ ఎట్టకేలకు ఏప్రిల్ మూడో వారంలో కొవిడ్ -19 కుల మతాలు, జాతి వర్గాల అంతరాలను పాటించదని వ్యాఖ్యా నించక తప్పలేదు. ‘భారత్‌లో కరోనా వైరస్ వ్యాప్తికి ముస్లింలే బాధ్యులని అవిరామంగా జరుగుతున్న ప్రచారాన్ని’ ఇస్లామిక్ దేశాల సంస్థ (ఓఐసి) ఖండించిన మరుసటి రోజు ప్రధానమంత్రి మోదీ ఆ వ్యాఖ్య చేయడం జరిగింది. అరబ్‌లకు వ్యతిరేకంగా బీజేపీ ఎంపి తేజస్వి సూర్య చేసిన ఒక ట్వీట్ వైరల్ కావడంతో యుఏఇ పౌర సమాజ ప్రముఖులు పలువురు తీవ్ర నిరసన తెలిపిన అనంతరమే ప్రధాని మోదీ ఆ వ్యాఖ్య చేయడం అనివార్యమయింది. ఆ వ్యాఖ్య చేసేనాటికే మోదీ మూడు సందర్భాలలో జాతి నుద్దేశించి ప్రసంగించారు. అయితే కరోనా వ్యాప్తి విషయమై ముస్లింలకు వ్యతిరేకంగా జరుగుతున్న దుష్ట ప్రచారం గురించి ఆయన తన ప్రసంగాలలో ఎలాంటి ప్రస్తావన చేయలేదు. రాజకీయ పలుకుబడి అపారంగా వుండడంతోపాటు అద్భుత భావప్రసార నైపుణ్యాలు గల మోదీ, కరోనా వ్యాప్తిపై మత పరమైన వివక్షతో కూడిన ప్రచారాన్ని ఖండిస్తూ మాట్లాడివుండవలసింది. కానీ మోదీ పాటించిన ఈ వైఖరి వల్ల ఎంతైనా నష్టం జరిగింది.

ఉత్తరప్రదేశ్ లో ముస్లిం విక్రేతల నుంచి కూరగాయల కొనుగోలును బాయ్‌కాట్ చేశారు. అహ్మదాబాద్ లో మతాలవారీగా వార్డుల నేర్పాటు చేయడంపై (దరిమిలా గుజరాత్ ప్రభుత్వం ఈ విషయాన్ని ఖండించింది) వెలువడిన వార్తలు ఆందోళన కలిగించాయి. అలాగే ఇండోర్‌లో ముస్లిం మొహల్లాలలో పోలీసులు, డాక్టర్లపై మూకల దాడులకు సంబంధించిన దృశ్యాలు అమితంగా భయపెట్టాయి. పేదరికం, నిరక్షరాస్యత, మత ఛాందసవాదం అమితంగా వున్న సమాజంలో ఇటువంటి కుటిల ప్రచారాలు సామాజిక సామరస్యాన్ని దెబ్బతీసి, పూర్తిగా విషపూరిత వాతావరణాన్ని నెలకొల్పుతాయనడంలో సందేహం లేదు. ఇప్పుడు కరోనా కల్లోలం సందర్భంలో ఇదే జరిగింది. తత్ఫలితంగా నెలకొన్న సామాజిక వైరాలు కరోనా విపత్తు సమసిపోయిన అనంతరం కూడా కొనసాగే ప్రమాదం ఎంతైనా వున్నది.

వాస్తవాలు వింతగా వుంటాయి. సత్యానంతర ప్రపంచంలో మల్టీ-మీడియా పరిశ్రమను పీడిస్తున్న నకిలీ వార్తల, తప్పుడు సమాచార వలయం నుంచి మనం బయటపడేందుకు భగవంతుడు కల్పించిన ఒక అవకాశమే కరోనా విలయం. వైరస్ మత చిహ్నాలేమీ ధరించదు. రుగ్మతకు లోను చేసి, చావును తీసుకొచ్చే విషక్రిమి అది. మలబార్ హిల్ ధనికులనూ, ధారవి పేదలనూ, దరిద్ర దామోదరులనూ; వసంత్ విహార్ కులీనులనూ, నిజాముద్దీన్ నిర్భాగ్యులనూ ఒకేలా పీడిస్తుంది. పక్షపాతం దానికి అస్వాభావికం. కరోనా వైరస్ మనకు మహా అపరిచిత (గ్రేట్ అన్‌నోన్). దాని వ్యాప్తిని అర్థం చేసుకోవాలంటే విభేదాలు, విద్వేషాలను రెచ్చగొట్టే ఎజెండాలపై కాకుండా ఖచ్చితమైన సమాచారంపై మన దృష్టిని నిరంతరం కేంద్రీకరించాలి. డాక్టర్లు, శాస్త్రవేత్తలు మనకు అస్వస్థత నుంచి ఉపశమనం కలిగించేవారూ ఆరోగ్య సంజీవినీ పరిశోధకులే గానీ విభజించి పాలిస్తూ వర్ధిల్లే రాజకీయ వేత్తలు కానే కారు. అందుకే కరోనా కథను మతతత్వ రాజకీయాల అపస్వరాలతో కాకుండా ఒక ప్రజాసేవగా పాత్రికేయ వృత్తి స్ఫూర్తి పునరావాహనతో చెప్పి తీరాలి.

2010–-19 సంవత్సరాల మధ్య కాలాన్ని భారతీయ టీవీ మీడియా లుప్త దశాబ్దంగా చెప్పవచ్చు. ఈ కాలంలో వార్తా నివేదన తన పరమార్థాన్ని కోల్పోయింది. అర్థవంతమైన కథనాల కంటే సంచలనాత్మకతకు ప్రాధాన్యం లభించింది. ఇదే కాలంలో పలు న్యూస్‌ఛానెల్స్ అభివృద్ధిపరచుకున్న బిజినెస్ మోడల్ స్టూడియో చర్చలకు అమిత ప్రాధాన్యమిచ్చింది. ఘటనలు, పరిణామాలను నేర్పుగా నివేదించడంపై శ్రద్ధ పూర్తిగా కొరవడింది. దీనివల్ల న్యూస్ ఛానెల్స్ తమ టిఆర్‌పిలు పెంచుకున్నాయోమో గానీ క్రమంగా విశ్వసనీయతను కోల్పోయాయి. టీవీ న్యూస్ అర్థరహిత ‘ఇన్ఫోటైన్‌మెంట్’ను ప్రోత్సహిస్తున్నాయనే భావన నెలకొన్నది. ఇదే దశాబ్దంలో నవీనతరం ఆన్‌లైన్ సైట్లను వీక్షించడం ముమ్మరమయింది. టీవీలలో ప్రసారమైన అర్థరహిత చర్చల తీరుతెన్నులు పాతతరం వీక్షకులను తీవ్ర అసంతృప్తికి లోను చేశాయి. కరోనా సంక్షోభంలో అందరూ ఇంటిపట్టునే వుండిపోవలసిరావడంతో టీవీ ప్రసారాలను వీక్షించేవారి సంఖ్య పెరిగింది. లాక్‌డౌన్ మొదటివారంలో టీవీ వీక్షకుల సంఖ్య 250 శాతం మేరకు పెరిగింది. కొవిడ్ -19 పాత్రికేయులు తమ విధ్యుక్త ధర్మ నిర్వహణకు నిజాయితీగా పునరంకితమయేందుకు కొవిడ్- 19 ఒక విధంగా, బహుశా చివరి అవకాశంగా భావిం చవచ్చు, అవును, కట్టుకథలు, కల్పిత ఘర్షణలు, విభేదాలు సృష్టించే ఎజెండాలకు కాకుండా యథార్థాలు, ఆలోచనాత్మక విశ్లేషణలతో ప్రపంచ గమనాన్ని, లోకం దినచర్యను ఎప్పటికప్పుడు నివేదించేందుకు ఇదొక మహత్తర అవకాశం. ఈ అవకాశాన్ని మనం సద్వినియోగపరచుకోవాలి. ఎందుకంటే మరొక అవకాశం మనకు లభించక పోవచ్చు.

న్యూఢిల్లీ, ఏప్రిల్‌ 23(ఆంధ్రజ్యోతి): కరోనాపై పోరాటంలో కేంద్రం రాష్ట్రాలకు అండగా నిలబడాలని, ఆర్థికంగా అండదండలు కల్పించాలని కాంగ్రెస్‌ వర్కింగ్‌ కమిటీ గురువారం డిమాండ్‌ చేసింది. దేశం తీవ్ర ఆర్థిక సంక్షోభంలో చిక్కుకుంటే కేంద్రంలోని మోదీ సర్కారు పిసినారిలా వ్యవహరిస్తూ అరకొర చర్యలు మాత్రమే తీసుకుంటోందని కాంగ్రెస్‌ అధ్యక్షురాలు సోనియాగాంధీ విమర్శించారు. ప్రజల కష్టాల పట్ల సానుభూతి, విశాల హృదయం, వేగంగా స్పందించే తత్వం కేంద్ర ప్రభుత్వంలో లేదని దుయ్యబట్టారు. కరోనా సంక్షోభ సమయంలోనూ బీజేపీ మత విద్వేషాలవైర్‌సను వ్యాపింపజేస్తోందని మండిపడ్డారు. ప్రస్తుత లాక్‌డౌన్‌ నుంచి ఎలా బయటపడాలన్న స్పష్టమైన వ్యూహం కేంద్రం దగ్గర లేదన్నారు. లాక్‌డౌన్‌లో మిగిలిన సమయాన్ని అయినా బయటపడే వ్యూహంపై వెచ్చించాలని సూచించారు. గురువారం కాంగ్రెస్‌ వర్కింగ్‌ కమిటీ వీడియో కాన్ఫరెన్సింగ్‌ ద్వారా సమావేశమైంది. సోనియాగాంధీ అధ్యక్షోపన్యాసం చేశారు.

‘‘కరోనా వైర్‌సపై దేశమంతా ఒక్కటిగా పోరాటం చేస్తుంటే బీజేపీ మత విద్వేషమనే వైరస్‌ వ్యాప్తిని కొనసాగిస్తోంది. సమాజ సామరస్యానికి తీరని నష్టం జరుగుతోంది. ఈ నష్టాన్ని పూడ్చడానికి చాలా కష్టపడాల్సి ఉంటుంది’’ అన్నారు. మహారాష్ట్రలోని పాల్గార్‌లో లాక్‌డౌన్‌ సమయంలో వాహనంలో వెళుతున్న హిందూ సాధువుల్ని పిల్లలను ఎత్తుకెళ్లే వారిగా అనుమానించి,కొట్టి చంపిన ఉదంతాన్ని బీజేపీ వివాదాస్పదం చేయడాన్ని సోనియా పరోక్షంగా ప్రస్తావించారు. మూడు వారాలుగా కరోనా వైరస్‌ ప్రబలుతున్న తీరు ఆందోనకరంగా ఉందని వ్యాఖ్యానించారు. దురదృష్టవశాత్తు టెస్టింగ్‌ తక్కువగా జరుగుతోందని, కిట్ల లభ్యత, నాణ్యత సమస్యలు ఉన్నాయని చెప్పారు.



వైద్యులకు, వైద్య సిబ్బందికి ఇచ్చే పీపీఈ కిట్ల సంఖ్య, నాణ్యత బాగా తక్కువగా ఉందని అన్నారు. ఈ సందర్భంగా వర్కింగ్‌ కమిటీ పలు తీర్మానాలు చేసింది. రాష్ట్రాలకు రావాల్సిన జీఎస్టీ బకాయిలను ఇచ్చేయాలని, రుణాలు తీసుకొనేందుకు మరింత స్వేచ్ఛ కల్పించాలని, రాష్ట్రాలకు ఆర్థిక మద్దతు ప్రారంభించాలని కోరింది. వ్యవసాయం, చిన్న, మధ్య తరహా రంగాలు తీసుకున్న రుణాలపై కనీసం ఏడాది పాటు మారటోరియం విఽధించాలని కూడా డిమాండ్‌ చేసింది. లాక్‌డౌన్‌తో ఏర్పడిన ఆర్థిక సంక్షోభాన్ని అధిగమించేందుకు పేదల కుటుంబాలకు రూ.7500 చొప్పున చెల్లించాలని సోనియా కోరారు. లాక్‌డౌన్‌ తొలిదశలోనే 12 కోట్ల మంది ఉపాధి కోల్పోయారని చెప్పారు. నిరుద్యోగం మరింత పెరిగే అవకాశాలు కనబడుతున్నాయని ఆందోళన వ్యక్తం చేశారు. ప్రభుత్వానికి నిర్మాణాత్మక సహకారం అందించేందుకు కాంగ్రెస్‌ సిద్ధంగా ఉందని చెప్పారు. వలస కార్మికులకు ఆహార, ఆర్థిక భద్రత కల్పించి, సంక్షోభం నుంచి గట్టెక్కించాలని సూచించారు.

రైతుల నుంచి ధాన్యం సేకరించి, పౌరులకు చేరేట్లు చూడాలని, చిన్న మధ్యతరహా పరిశ్రమలు కుప్పకూలిపోకుండా సంక్షేమ ప్యాకేజీని ప్రకటించాలని కోరారు. ఈ రంగంలో 11 కోట్ల మంది కార్మికులు ఉన్నారని ప్రస్తావించారు. సరైన రక్షణ పరికరాలు లేకపోయినా ప్రాణాలకు తెగించి పోరాడుతున్న వైద్య సిబ్బందికి భారత ప్రజలు వందనం చేయాలన్నారు. వర్కింగ్‌ కమిటీ సమావేశంలో కాంగ్రెస్‌ పాలిత రాష్ట్రాల ముఖ్యమంత్రులు కూడా వీడియో కాన్ఫరెన్సింగ్‌ ద్వారా పాల్గొన్నారు. కేంద్రం తమకు ఎలాంటి ఆర్థిక సాయం చేయడం లేదని సీఎంలు ఆరోపించారు. కేంద్రం భారీ ప్యాకేజీ ఇవ్వకపోతే రాష్ట్రాలు లాక్‌డౌన్‌ తర్వాత బయటపడటం సాధ్యం కాదని చెప్పారు.   రాష్ట్రాల జీఎస్టీ వాటాను విడుదల చేయాలని డిమాండ్‌ చేశారు. రాష్ట్రాల సరిహద్దుల్లో చిక్కుకున్న వలస కార్మికులను కరోనా పరీక్షలు నిర్వహించి, సొంత రాష్ట్రాలకు అనుమతించాలని రాహుల్‌గాంధీ, ప్రియాంకగాంధీ డిమాండ్‌ చేశారు. వారిని ఇళ్లకు చేర్చే బాధ్యతను సొంత రాష్ట్రాలు తీసుకోవాలని కోరారు.

న్యూఢిల్లీ, ఏప్రిల్‌ 23: లాక్‌డౌన్‌ నేపథ్యంలో రంజాన్‌ మాసంలో ఇంట్లోనే నమాజు చేయాలని ముస్లింలకు ఢిల్లీలోని జామా మసీదు, ఫతేపురి మసీదు షాహీ ఇమామ్‌లు సూచించారు. కరోనా వైరస్‌ వ్యాపించకుండా సహకరించాలని కోరారు. ముస్లింలు ఎక్కువగా ఉండే ప్రాంతాల్లో ప్రజలు బయటికెళ్లి ‘రంజాన్‌’ సామాగ్రిని తెచ్చుకునేందుకు ఏర్పాట్లు చేయాలని ప్రభుత్వానికి విజ్ఞప్తి చేశారు.

ముస్లిములు ప్రతి ఏటా జకాత్ చెల్లిస్తుంటారు. ఎవరూ వారికి ప్రత్యేకంగా ఈ విషయం గుర్తు చేయనవసరం లేదు. ఎవరికివారు వ్యక్తిగతంగా కూడా చెల్లిస్తుంటారు. వ్యవస్థీకృతంగా జకాత్ నిధులు సేకరించి సంక్షేమకార్యక్రమాలకు ఖర్చు చేయడం కూడా జరుగుతుంటుంది.
ఈ సంవత్సరం విచిత్రంగా ప్రభుత్వ వర్గాల నుంచి జకాత్ చెల్లించి పేదలను ఆదుకోవాలనే అప్పీళ్ళు వినవచ్చాయి. హిమాచల్ ప్రదేశ్ డైరెక్టర్ జనరల్ ఆఫ్ పోలీస్ ఈ అప్పీలు చేశారు. ప్రవక్త ముహమ్మద్ సల్లల్లాహు అలైహి వసల్లమ్ బోధనలను ముస్లిములు ఆచరించాలని, తమ సంపదలో రెండున్నరశాతం పేదల కోసం ఖర్చు చేయాలని, కరోనా మహమ్మారి ప్రజల జీవితాలను చిన్నాభిన్నం చేసిన నేపథ్యంలో పేదలను ఆదుకోవాలని, ముస్లిములు పి.ఎం.కేర్స్ నిధికి లేదా సి.ఎం.రిలీఫ్ నిధికి విరాళంగా కూడా ఇవ్వవచ్చని ఆయన అప్పీలు చేశారు.
రమజాన్ మాసం ఈ సారి కరోనా సంక్షోభసమయంలో వచ్చింది. నిజానికి రమజాన్ కన్నా ముందే కరోనా వచ్చింది. రమజాన్ మాసం చాలా పవిత్రమైన మాసం కాబట్టి సాధారణంగా ముస్లిములు జకాత్ రమజాన్ మాసంలో చెల్లిస్తుంటారు. కానీ, కరోనా విపత్తు వచ్చి పడిన తర్వాత, వేలాది వలస కార్మికులు రోడ్లపై తమ సొంతూళ్ళకు పిల్లాపాపలతో కాలినడకన బయలుదేరిన విషాదదృశ్యాలు ముందుకు వచ్చిన తర్వాత, అనేకమంది పేదలు లాక్ డౌన్ వల్ల తినడానికి తిండి లేక అలమటిస్తున్నారని తెలిసిన తర్వాత చాలా మంది ముస్లిములు పేదలకు అన్నదానాల కార్యక్రమాలు ప్రారంభించారు. దాంతో పాటు జకాత్ లెక్కించి పేదల కోసం ఖర్చు పెట్టడానికి రమజాన్ వచ్చే వరకు ఆగవలసిన పనిలేదని, కరోనా విపత్తు ముంచుకు వచ్చింది కాబట్టి వెంటనే జకాత్ లెక్క కట్టి చెల్లించాలని కూడా చాలా మంది ధర్మవేత్తలు ప్రకటించారు. ఈ ప్రకటనల ప్రభావం కూడా ముస్లిములపై పడింది. అనేకమంది తమ తమ జకాత్ ఎంత ఉందో లెక్కించి దానధర్మాలకు ఖర్చు చేయడం ప్రారంభమయ్యింది.
జకాత్ అంటే ఏమిటి? అనేది చాలా మంది ముస్లిమేతర సోదరులకు తెలియకపోవచ్చు. కాబట్టి క్లుప్తంగా జకాత్ గురించి తెలుసుకుందాం. జకాత్ ముస్లిములు తప్పనిసరిగా చెల్లించవలసిన ధార్మిక విధి. ఇస్లాంకు మూలస్తంభాలుగా పరిగణన పొందిన ఐదు మౌలికవిధుల్లో ఇది ఒకటి. అయితే ముస్లిములందరిపై జకాత్ విధి కాదు. జకాత్ అనేది ఆర్థిక ఆరాధన. కాబట్టి స్తోమత ఉన్న ముస్లిములకు మాత్రమే విధి. స్తోమత ఉన్న ముస్లిములంటే ఎవరనే ప్రశ్నకు కూడా ఖచ్చితమైన సమాధానముంది. ఒక వ్యక్తి వద్ద ఒక సంవత్సర కాలం అతని ఖర్చులు పోగా అతని వద్ద మిగిలిన సంపద ఆధారంగా జకాత్ లెక్కిస్తారు.
స్తోమత కలిగిన ముస్లిం అంటే ఏడున్నర తులాల బంగారం లేదా యాభైరెండున్నర తులాల వెండికి సమానమైన సంపద ఒక సంవత్సరం పాటు తన వద్ద ఉన్న వ్యక్తి ఆ సంపదపై రెండున్నర శాతం జకాత్ చెల్లించాలి. అంటే ఏడున్నర తులాల బంగారం వెల లేదా యాభై రెండున్నర తులాల వెండి వెల ఈ రెండింటిలో ఏది తక్కువగా ఉంటుందో అది జకాత్ చెల్లించడానికి నిసాబ్ గా భావించాలి. ఇప్పుడు మార్కెటు ధరల ప్రకారం ఏడున్నర తులాల బంగారం కన్నా యాభై రెండున్నర తులాల వెండి ధర తక్కువగా ఉంది. కాబట్టి యాభై రెండున్నర తులాల వెండి విలువ కన్నా ఎక్కువ సంపద తన వద్ద ఉన్న వ్యక్తి జకాత్ చెల్లించవలసి ఉంటుంది. ఈ రోజు వెండి విలువను బట్టి లెక్కేస్తే 23 వేల రూపాయల సంపద తన వద్ద ఉన్న వ్యక్తి జకాత్ చెల్లించవలసి ఉంటుంది.
జకాత్ పేదవారికి చెల్లించాలి. సాధారణంగా అత్యంత పవిత్రమైన రమజాను మాసంలో జకాత్ కూడా చెల్లిస్తుంటారు. కాని కరోనా వచ్చిపడిన ఈ విపత్కర పరిస్థితిలో చాలా మంది రమజాను కన్నా ముందే జకాత్ చెల్లింపులకు సిద్ధపడ్డారు. అనేకమంది నిరుపేదలకు ఆహారం అందించారు.
స్తోమత కలిగిన ప్రతి ముస్లిం తప్పనిసరిగా జకాత్ చెల్లిస్తాడు. కాని దేశంలో ముస్లిముల పరిస్థితి ఎలా ఉందో సచార్ కమిటి, రంగనాథ మిశ్రా కమీషన్ వంటివి చాటి చెప్పాయి. చాలా విషయాల్లో ముస్లిములు దళితుల కన్నా దయానీయమైన స్థితిలో ఉన్నారు. హైదరాబాద్ నగరాన్ని తీసుకుంటే, ఇక్కడి ముస్లిం జనాభాలో కేవలం 2 శాతం మాత్రమే సంపన్నులుగా చెప్పవచ్చు. అంటే కోటి నుంచి వందకోట్ల సంపద కలిగిన వారు. కాగా 63 శాతం ముస్లిములు దారిద్ర్యరేఖకు దిగువన బతుకుతున్నారు. వీరంతా ప్రభుత్వ సంక్షేమపథకాల ద్వారా ఎలాగోలా బతుకీడుస్తున్నారు. కేవలం రెండు నుంచి మూడు శాతం ముస్లిములు మాత్రమే వార్షికాదాయం పాతికలక్షలు లేదా అంతకన్నా ఎక్కువ కలిగి ఉన్నారు. పది నుంచి పదిహేను శాతం ముస్లిములు మధ్యతరగతిలో ఉన్నారు. వీరి వార్షికాదాయం రెండు నుంచి ఐదు లక్షల లోపే ఉంది. దాదాపు 20 శాతం ముస్లిములు దిగువతరగతి ముస్లిములు. లక్షరూపాయల కన్నా తక్కువ వార్షికాదాయం కలిగిన వారున్నారు. జకాత్ నిధులను సద్వినియోగానికి సంబంధించి అవసరమైన డాటాను హెల్పింగ్ హ్యాండ్ ఫౌండేషన్ సేకరించింది. ఈ డాటా ప్రకారం హైదారబాద్ నగరంలో 36 లక్షల 30 వేల మంది ముస్లిములు దారిద్ర్యరేఖకు దిగువన ఉన్నారు. 11 లక్షల 60 వేల మంది దిగువ మధ్యతరగతి. లక్షా 70 వేల మంది ఎగువ మధ్యతరగతి. లక్షా ఇరవై వేల మంది సంపన్నులు. అంటే వార్షికాదాయం కోటి కన్నా ఎక్కువ ఉన్నవారు. 29 లక్షల 30 వేల మంది రోజు కూలీలు. 7 లక్షల 30 వేల మంది మహిళలు వితంతువులు లేదా మగదిక్కు లేని వారు. జకాత్ నిధులతో ఈ జనాభాలో అర్హులైన వారిని ఆదుకోవచ్చును.
ముస్లిములు వ్యక్తిగతంగా జకాత్ నిధులు పేదవారికి అందించడం చేస్తుంటారు. కొన్ని సంస్థలు జకాత్ నిదులను సేకరించి సంక్షేమకార్యక్రమాలకు వెచ్చిస్తుంటాయి. హెల్పింగ్ హ్యాండ్ ఫౌండేషన్ అలాంటిదే. అలాగే అసోసియేషన్ ఆఫ్ ముస్లిం ప్రొఫెషనల్స్ కూడా అలాంటిదే. ఈ సంస్థ కూడా తనదైన సర్వే నిర్వహించింది. 2019లో ఈ సర్వే వివరాలను ప్రకటించారు. ఈ సర్వే ప్రపంచవ్యాప్తంగా జరిపారు. దేశంలోని 175 పట్టణాల్లో సర్వే జరిగింది. ఈ సర్వేలో తెలిసిన విషయాలేమంటే, జకాత్ చెల్లించవలసిన వారిలో 84 శాతానికి పైబడి జకాత్ చెల్లిస్తున్నారు. మిగిలిన 16 శాతం జకాత్ చెల్లించకపోడానికి అనేక కారణాలున్నాయి. అయితే జకాత్ ఛెల్లించేవారిలో జకాత్ గురించి పూర్తి పరిజ్ఞానం కలిగిన వారు కేవలం 30 శాతం మాత్రమేనని కూడా తెలిసింది. చాలా మంది వ్యక్తిగతంగా జకాత్ ఇస్తున్నారు. దాదాపు 60 శాతం మంది ప్రతి సంవత్సరం జకాత్ ఇస్తున్నవారికే మళ్ళీ మళ్ళీ ఇస్తున్నారు. ఒక ధార్మిక విధిని నిర్వర్తించే భావనతో జకాత్ చెల్లిస్తున్నారే కాని, జకాత్ తీసుకున్న వారి జీవితాల్లో ఆర్థికంగా ఏమైనా మార్పు వస్తుందా లేదా అన్నది గమనించడం లేదు. అసోసియేషన్ ఆఫ్ ముస్లిం ప్రొఫెషనల్స్ జకాత్ నిధులు సద్వినియోగమయ్యేలా చూడ్డానికి ప్రయత్నిస్తోంది. అలాగే అనేక ముస్లిం సంస్థలు ఈ ప్రయత్నాలు చేస్తున్నాయి. జమాఅతె ఇస్లామీ హింద్ దేశంలో ఇలాంటి ప్రయత్నాలు ముమ్మరంగా కొనసాగిస్తోంది. 2016లో ఏటా దేశంలో ఎంత జకాత్ పంపకం జరుగుతుందన్నది లెక్కించే ప్రయత్నం జరిగింది. ఆల్ ఇండియా కౌన్సిల్ ఆఫ్ ముస్లిం అప్ లిఫ్ట్ మెంట్ ఈ ప్రయత్నాలు చేసింది. దాదాపు 30వేల కోట్ల రూపాయల జకాత్ నిధులు పంపిణీ అవుతున్నాయని తెలిసింది. అయితే చాలా వరకు జకాత్ పంపకం వ్యక్తిగత స్థాయిలో జరిగిపోతుంది కాబట్టి, నగదు రూపంలో జకాత్ ఇస్తున్నారు కాబట్టి ఈ మొత్తం ఇంకా చాలా ఎక్కువ ఉండవచ్చని పలువురు అభిప్రాయపడుతున్నారు.
ఏది ఏమైనా చాలా భారీ మొత్తంలో జకాత్ నిదులు ప్రతి సంవత్సరం పంపిణీ అవుతున్నాయి. దేశంలో పేదరికాన్ని పారదోలడానికి జకాత్ ఎంతైనా ఉపయోగపడుతోంది. దేశఆర్థికవ్యవస్థకు జకాత్ ఎంతో ఉపయోగపడుతోంది. నిజం చెప్పలంటే రమజాన్ మాసం ఆర్థికవ్యవస్థకు గొప్ప వేగాన్నిస్తుంది. రమజాన్ మాసంలో భారీగా క్రయవిక్రయాలు జరుగుతాయి. ముస్లిములు ఈ మాసంలో దానధర్మాలకు ఖర్చు పెట్టడమే కాదు, షాపింగ్ కోసం కూడా ఖర్చు పెడతారు. మిగిలిన పదకొండు నెలల్లో జరిగే వ్యాపారం కన్నా ఈ ఒక్క నెలలో జరిగే వ్యాపారం చాలా ప్రాంతాల్లో చాలా ఎక్కువగా ఉంటుంది. ద్రవ్యం మార్కెటులో చెలామణీలోకి వెళుతుంది. దానివల్ల ఉపాధి అవకాశాలు పెరుగుతాయి. ఆర్ధికవ్యవస్థ మరింత బలం పుంజుకుంటుంది.
కాని ఈ సారి రమజాన్ మాసం కోవిద్ 19 లాక్ డౌన్ లో వచ్చింది. రమజాన్ మాసంలో నమాజులకు ఎంతో ప్రాముఖ్యం ఇస్తారు. నెలరోజులు ఉపవాసాలు ఉంటారు. ఈ నెలలోనే చాలా మంది జకాత్ చెల్లిస్తారు. అంతేకాదు, ఈ నెలలో తమ మనోవాంఛలు, కోరికలు, ఆకాంక్షలతో సంఘర్షిస్తూ సన్మార్గాన నడిచే ప్రయత్నాలు చేస్తారు. ఈ ప్రయత్నాలే అసలైన జిహాద్. అంటే మనిషి తన మనోవాంఛలతో పోరాడి సరయిన మార్గాన నడవడానికి చేసే ప్రయత్నం.
కాని ఈ సంవత్సరం లాక్ డౌన్ , భౌతిక దూరాల నియమాలను పాటించడం చాలా అవసరం. అంటు వ్యాధుల విషయంలో ప్రవక్త ముహమ్మద్ సల్లల్లాహు అలైహి వసల్లం ప్రవచనాలు, సంప్రదాయాలు చాలా స్పష్టంగా ఉన్నాయి. అంటువ్యాధి ప్రబలిన ప్రాంతం నుంచి ప్రజలు బయటకు వెళ్ళరాదని, ఆ ప్రాంతానికి బయటి వారు రాకూడదని ప్రవక్త స్పష్టంగా చెప్పారు. లాక్ డౌనంటే ఇదే కదా. అలాగే అంటువ్యాధి ఉన్న వ్యక్తితో కరచలనం చేయరాదని కూడా ఆయన నివారించారు. ఒక సందర్భంలో అంటువ్యాధి కలిగిన ఒక వ్యక్తితో కరచలనం చేయనవసరం లేదని, దూరంగా ఉండడం కరచలనం చేయడంతో సమానమని చెప్పారు. ఇదే భౌతిక దూరం పాటించడం. ఈ రెండు ఇస్లాం ధర్మం బోధిస్తోంది. కాబట్టి కరోనా విస్తరిస్తున్న నేపథ్యంలో లాక్ డౌన్ కు కట్టుబడి, భౌతికదూరం పాటిస్తూ రమజాన్ మాసాన్ని దైవారాధనలో గడపవలసి ఉంది. ఆ విధంగా కరోనా మహమ్మారిని నిరోధించాలి. సాధారణ పరిస్థితుల్లో మాదిరిగా ఇప్పుడు ఇఫ్తార్ పార్టీలు చేయరాదు. ఎవరి ఇండ్లలో వారు ఇఫ్తార్ చేసుకోవాలి. సామూహిక ప్రార్థనలు చేయరాదు. ఎవరి ఇండ్ల్లో వారు నమాజులు చదువుకోవాలి. ఇలా ఇంటికి పరిమితం కావడమే ధర్మాన్ని పాటించడం. ఇదే దైవాభిష్టం కాబట్టి దైవాభిష్టానికి కట్టుబడాలి. కరచలనాలు ఇప్పుడు నిషిద్ధం. దానికి బదులు ఒకప్పుడు ఒట్టోమాన్ సామ్రాజ్య కాలంలో ప్రజలు ఒకరికొకరు అభివాదం తెలియజేయడానికి తమ చేయి గుండెలపై పెట్టుకుని అభివాదం తెలిపేవారు. ఆ పద్ధతి పాటించాలని చాలా మంది అప్పీలు చేశారు.
ఇక జకాత్ విషయానికి వస్తే, ఇప్పుడు జకాత్ 60వేల కోట్ల రూపాయలకు పైబడి పంపిణీ అవుతుందని పలువురి అంచనా. జకాత్ మాత్రమే కాకుండా ఇతర దానధర్మాలు, అన్నదానాలు, ఆహారపంఫిణీ వంటివి కలుపుకుంటే దాదాపు లక్ష కోట్ల రూపాయలు ఈ విధంగా ఖర్చవుతాయని అంచనా. కోవిద్ 19 సంక్షోభ సమయంలో ఈ జకాత్ నిదులను సరయిన విధంగా ఖర్చు పెడితే పేదవారికి ఎంతైనా ఉపయోగపడతాయి. ముఖ్యంగా కరోనా కారణంగా, లాక్ డౌన్ లో ఉపాధి కోల్పోయి, నగరాల్లో ఇరుక్కుపోయిన వలస కూలీలు, తమ తమ ఊళ్ళకు కాలినడకన బయలుదేరిన అనేకమంది కూలీల దీనావస్థను చాలా మంది చూశారు., ఇలాంటి ఎంతో మంది నిరుపేదలను ఈ నిధులతో ఆదుకోవచ్చు. అలాగే ఈ సారి ఇఫ్తార్ పార్టీలు ఇచ్చే అవకాశాలు లేవు, కాబట్టి ముస్లిములు ఏదైనా స్వచ్ఛంద సంస్థల ద్వారా ఆహారపోట్లాలు అన్నార్తులకు పంపిణీ చేసే కార్యక్రమానికి ఈ సొమ్ము ఇవ్వడం ద్వారా రమజాన్ శుభాలను పొందవచ్చు.
ఇస్లాం ధర్మం మనిషిపై కాఠిన్యాన్ని విధించదు. అవసరమైన మినహాయింపులు ఎల్లవేళలా ఇస్తుంది. సౌదీ అరేబియాకు చెందిన గ్రాండ్ ముఫ్తీ షేక్ అబ్దుల్ అజీజల్ షేక్ భౌతిక దూరం విషయంలో మాట్లాడుతూ పండుగ రోజు వరకు పరిస్థితి కుదుట పడకపోతే, పండుగ నమాజు కూడా సామూహికంగా చేయవలసిన అవసరం లేదని అన్నారు. అప్పటి వరకు పరిస్థితి చక్కబడాలని ఆశిద్దాం.
ఒక్క భారతదేశంలో మాత్రమే కాదు, ప్రపంచవ్యాప్తంగా జకాత్ ఫంపిణీ చాలా భారీస్థాయిలో జరుగుతుంది. నిజానికి ప్రపంచవ్యాప్తంగా జరిగే మానవీయ సహాయం విషయంలో జకాత్ నిధులే ఎక్కువ అని చెప్పాలి. కొన్నేళ్ళ క్రితం నాటి లెక్కల ప్రకారం, అంటే వ్యవస్థీకృతంగా లెక్కల్లో కనిపించిన జకాత్ పంఫిణీని లెక్కిస్తేనే 500 నుంచి 600 బిలియన్ డాలర్ల జకాత్ నిధులు ఏటా పంపిణీ అవుతున్నట్లు తెలిసింది. ఇక అసంఘటితంగా, వ్యక్తిగత స్థాయిలో జరిగే జకాత్ పంపకాలను కూడా కలుపుకుంటే ఇది ట్రిలియన్ల డాలర్లలో ఉంటుంది. ఆర్గనైజేషన్ ఆఫ్ ఇస్లామిక్ కో ఆపరేషన్ లో మొత్తం 57 దేశాలున్నాయి. ఇందులో 24 దేశాలకు మానవీయ సహాయం అవసరం ఉంది. ఈ సహాయం జకాత్ నిధుల ద్వారా అందుతోంది.
కరోనా కాలంలో పేదలను ఆదుకోడానికి జకాత్ నిధులను వెచ్చించడం, ఇఫ్తార్ పార్టీలకు వెచ్చించే సొమ్మును ఆహారపోట్లాలు పేదసాదలకు పంచిపెట్టడానికి స్వచ్ఛంద సంస్థలు, ప్రభుత్వ యంత్రాంగం ద్వారా వెచ్చించడం ద్వారా ఈ రమజాన్ లో జకాత్ మానవీయ సహాయానికి ఎంత గొప్ప సాధనమో, ప్రపంచంలో పేదరికాన్ని తొలగించడంలో ఇది ఎంత ఉపయోగపడుతుందో మనం చాటి చెప్పవచ్చు.
మరో ముఖ్యమైన విషయమేమంటే, ప్రస్తుతం లాక్ డౌన్ వల్ల ఆర్ధిక ప్రగతి చక్రాలు ఆగిపోయాయి. ప్రజలు ఖర్చు పెట్టడం లేదు. మార్కెట్లో క్రయవిక్రయాలు లేకపోతే ఆర్థికకార్యకలాపాలు ఉండవు. ఒక్క వ్యవసాయరంగంలో మాత్రమే కొంత కదలిక ఉంది. ఈ నేపథ్యంలో ప్రజల వద్దకు డబ్బు రావాలి. అప్పుడే వాళ్ళు ఖర్చు పెట్టగలరు. ప్రజలు ఖర్చు పెడితేనే ఆర్ధిక వ్యవస్థ మళ్ళీ వేగాన్న అందుకుంటుంది. జకాత్ పంపిణీ ద్వారా పేదసాద ప్రజలకు కొనుగోలు శక్తి లభిస్తుంది. మార్కెటులో మళ్ళీ ఆర్ధిక కార్యకలాపాలు ప్రారంభం కావడానికి ఈ కొనుగోలు శక్తి ఉపయోగపడుతుంది. ఈ సంవత్సరం రమజాన్ మాసం ఆర్ధిక ప్రగతికి తోడ్పడాలని అల్లాహ్ ను ప్రార్థిద్దాం. కరోనా సంక్షోభం నుంచి మానవాళి గట్టెక్కాలని వేడుకుందాం.
