The marriage of a Hindu Bharatiya Janata Party leader’s daughter to a Muslim man slated for next week in Uttarakhand has been postponed after party leaders and other local Hindutva groups opposed it, The Telegraph reported on Sunday.
Yashpal Benam, the president of the Pauri Nagar Palika, made the announcement while speaking to reporters on Saturday.

Benam’s daughter Monika was slated to get married to a man named Monis on May 28.
However, the BJP leader faced criticism and abuse after a photograph of the wedding invitation card was shared online. Some people claimed that the wedding was an instance of love jihad – a debunked conspiracy theory according to which Muslim men lure Hindu women into romantic relationships in order to convert them to Islam.
Benam on Saturday said that he did not want the local administration and the police to face problems on account of the marriage.
“I have discussed the controversy created by some people from my own party over this marriage with the parents of the groom and we have together decided to cancel all the functions for the time being,” he said.
The BJP leader said he came to know that some local organisations had planned to protest against the marriage.
“The police are alert but it doesn’t look good for the wedding to be conducted under the shadow of force,” he said. “Keeping in mind the law-and-order situation, the two families have decided not to go ahead with the functions planned on May 26, 27 and 28. We will soon decide what to do.”

While Hindutva hardliners are trolling the former MLA and the saffron party alleging “double standards", others are calling the marriage an attempt of "Love Jihad", comparing it with the recently released controversial movie The Kerala Stories.
“The BJP-ruled states are making films like ‘The Kerala Story’ tax-free while here a BJP leader’s daughter is marrying a Muslim man. These are double standards of the BJP and party workers will get demoralised,” said a Facebook user.
“Love jihad” is a term often used by BJP leaders as well as right-wing activists to allege a ploy by Muslim men to lure Hindu women into religious conversion through marriage.

Speaking to India Today, officials from the Pauri Temple Committee said, "It is a matter of concern. Getting daughters of Hindu families married to men from other religions is a part of propaganda. In India, the laws on conversion are being altered, the tombs built for and by people of other communities on government properties are being demolished by the Centre. Still, BJP's own leaders are getting their daughters married to a Muslim man," one of the committee members said.
He further said that people from the Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal should oppose this.
"BJP is a party for the protection of Hindus. It should immediately expel such people from the party," the man added.
People close to Yashpal Benam, on condition of anonymity, said that his daughter studied at Lucknow University and was in a relationship with the man whom she is going to marry.
The wedding is slated to take place at a resort in Pauri on May 28. Benam is the chairman of the Pauri Municipal Corporation. He was earlier with the Congress and won as an independent from the Pauri Assembly constituency in 2007.
Political leaders from both the BJP and the Congress have been invited to the wedding.

Yashpal Rawat alias Yashpal Benam, a BJP leader in Uttarakhand who is the Nagar Palika chairperson of the Pauri Garhwal district, cancelled his daughter’s wedding with a Muslim man due to protests from religious leaders and right wing groups.
The wedding, scheduled on May 28, became the talk of the town after the invitation card went viral. It mentioned the names of the bride and groom who met during their engineering course in a college in Roorkee. As the news spread, Mr. Rawat started receiving ‘warnings’ to call off the wedding.
During a public event organised in the State capital Dehradun by a religious leader, Swami Darshan Bharti, the public was asked to boycott Mr. Rawat because by marrying his daughter to a Muslim, he was supporting “love jihad”.
“He should be the first one to oppose ‘love Jihad’ and ‘land jihad’. But look, how shamelessly he is calling Muslims to come to ‘Devbhoomi’ (land of gods) and marry our daughters,” said Mr. Bharti and asked the attendees if Mr. Rawat should be taught a lesson. The audience raised hands in affirmation followed by more ‘hate speeches’.
A right-wing group from Haryana, whose members were on their way to Char Dham yatra and got to know about the wedding via social media, stopped at Pauri, especially to raise ‘objections’. They went to Nagar Palika’s office to threaten the chairman who fled seeing the group.
NGOs memorandum
Some NGOs also gave a memorandum to District Magistrate (Pauri) expressing concern over the wedding.
“Such inter-religious marriages will disturb the peace of the land of Uttarakhand. We request you to ensure that even if this wedding happens, Mr. Rawat should go outside the State to do the same,” the memorandum given by EK Prayas, the NGO, said.
After facing a weeklong protest, Mr. Rawat called off the wedding on Saturday. Speaking to The Hindu, he maintained that he could name many big leaders of his own party and Opposition who married off children into other communities and expressed shock at the kind of protest that he faced when he did the same.
“Due to people’s outrage, both in person and on social media, I have to cancel the wedding of my daughter,” Mr. Rawat said. He will be meeting the groom’s family in Amethi soon to decide the next course of action.

"Being a public representative, I did not want my daughter's marriage to take place under the protection of the police and the administration. I respect public sentiments," the BJP leader told media persons on Saturday.
"My daughter was going to get married to a Muslim youth. Keeping in view the happiness and future of the children, both families had decided to get them married, for which the cards were also printed and shared. But after the invitation card for the wedding went viral on social media, many types of things came to the fore objecting to the wedding," he said.
"After the controversy erupted, with mutual consent, both families decided not to carry out the marriage rituals for the time being," the BJP leader added.
However, he said that the decision regarding his daughter's marriage to the same man would be taken together with the family, well-wishers and the groom's side.
Benam is the chairman of the Pauri Municipal Corporation. He was earlier with the Congress and won as an independent from the Pauri Assembly constituency in 2007.
While claims of polarisation and the consequent manifestation in society is denied by authoritarian figures, unless it is ‘fictionalised’ in movies blaming one religious faith, this incident potentially bears testimony to the dichotomization in contemporary society.
